Information for Educational Supervisors

Educational Supervisor Reviews (ESRs) are done twice a year for the continual assessment processes of nMRCGP.

The mid-year reviews (6, 18 and 30 months) are important in assessing whether progress is training is going to plan and to highlight any areas of need.

The annual reviews have the additional importance of deciding whether a trainee has performed sufficiently well to pass through the relevant"gateway" from ST1 to ST2, ST2 to ST3 or, in the final year to obtain the Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT).

Any"Unsatisfactory" progress at the annual reviews can result in the need for an extension to training.

The timing of annual reviews is important in order to allow time for the authorisation of progress to the next stage of training.

ST1 and ST2 annual reviews (12 and 24 months) can be done the month before the due gateway date. (For most trainees this will be August, but may be different if there have been gaps in training, late starts etc.) The ST3 annual review MUST be done 2 MONTHS before the expected date of completion. If not, the CCT may be delayed and trainees not be able to work.

Arranging Educational Supervisor Reviews is ultimately the responsibility of the trainee, not the Educational Supervisor.
